It's quite possible your computer is too old to upgrade past Lion, but if you can then El Capitan will probably be your limit.

The download that you can expect will give you a full download for macOS 10.13.2 - the current version. The ONLY way to revert to 10.13.0 is to find that original release version somewhere. The recovery system does not do that. Normally, updating the macOS to its current version will solve the problem. However, this won't work if the iOS device is running a newer beta version, and the Mac is not. If you don't want to run the beta version of macOS (or downgrade the iOS device to a non-beta version), a solution is to install the beta version of Xcode. To do this from within macOS High Sierra, click on the Apple menu and select 'App Store'. From the App Store, click on the 'Updates' tab, and you should see 'macOS 10.13.1 Update 10.13.1' listed. I was able to download the macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 full installer version thanks to a mid 2012 macbook pro with macOS El Capitan installed. All other attempts with the latest mac book pro and already installed versions of the operating system (Catalina or Mojave) have been unsuccessful.

Upgrading to El Capitan

You can upgrade to El Capitan from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. El Capitan can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

To upgrade to El Capitan you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download El Capitan from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. El Capitan is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities' folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

Upgrading to Lion

If your computer does not meet the requirements to install El Capitan, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.

You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
